Composed in 1922 and premiered in Paris in early 1923, Milhaud’s Sonatine for Flute and Piano reflects his early 20th-century style—lyrical, rhythmically supple, and harmonically fresh. Dedicated to Louis Fleury and Jean Wiéner, the work unfolds in three concise movements: Tendre, Souple, and Clair, each offering a distinct mood and character. The flute part is expressive yet accessible, making it a favorite among intermediate to advanced players seeking repertoire beyond the standard Romantic canon.
This edition, published by Durand, features clean engraving typical of the period and remains a valuable piece for performers and collectors alike. Ideal for recital programming or historical study, it captures Milhaud’s unique voice within the French modernist tradition.
