Description
Janáček’s Piano Sonata 1.X.1905, also known as “From the Street”, is a deeply expressive two-movement work composed in 1905. It was written as a tribute to František Pavlík, a young carpenter who was killed during demonstrations advocating for a Czech university in Brno.
The sonata originally had three movements, but Janáček destroyed the final funeral march before its premiere in 1906. The remaining two movements are:
Předtucha (Foreboding) – Con moto
Smrt (Death) – Adagio
The piece was lost for years until pianist Ludmila Tučková revealed she had a copy in 1924, leading to its publication. The revised edition by Radoslav Kvapil includes interpretative notes
