Description
Maxon, OD-9 Overdrive, Nine Series
The Maxon OD-9 might resemble your old favorite, but the similarities end there. With its enhanced circuitry, the OD-9 leads the evolution of the Nine Series effects.
The OD-9 employs a signal-distorting diode (Panasonic #MA150) situated in the negative feedback loop of the amplifier stage, which also houses the JRC4558 IC chip. As a result, the OD-9 distorts the signal within the amplifier section itself, producing a smoother, milder, and more natural distortion compared to a separate clipping stage. The type of IC used significantly influences the tone, a unique design Maxon pioneered over 20 years ago, setting an industry standard.
The updated circuit of the OD-9 features different output resistors compared to its predecessor. Post-launch, it was found to be highly susceptible to noise from static electricity buildup. Enhancing performance involved increasing the values of the output resistors on the OD-9 while maintaining their original positions. This modification does not audibly alter the sound, except for minimizing unwanted noise. Moreover, the OD-9 boasts True Bypass Switching to ensure a pure, unaffected tone when bypassed.
Similar to the OD808, the OD-9 delivers the gentle, natural overdrive of a tube amp without compromising the guitar’s inherent tone. It can also serve as a clean booster, offering increased gain from an amplifier.
